< Operculicarya decaryi care >
Operculicarya decaryi, also known as the Madagascar elephant tree or jabily, is a unique, drought-tolerant plant.
Light
• Prefers bright, indirect light or full sun.
• Place it in a sunny window if grown indoors. Outdoors, partial to full sun is ideal.
Watering
• Operculicarya decaryi is drought-tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
• During the growing season (spring and summer), water sparingly, about every 1-2 weeks.
• In fall and winter, reduce watering even further, especially if the plant is in a dormant phase.
Soil
• Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
• Adding pumice or perlite to the soil will enhance drainage and prevent root rot.
Temperature and Humidity
• Thrives in warm temperatures, between 65–85°F (18–29°C).
• Protect it from frost, as it is not cold-hardy and prefers a dry environment.
Fertilizer
• During the active growing season, feed with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer once a month.
• Avoid fertilizing in the dormant winter period.
Pruning and Shaping
• Can be pruned to maintain its shape or enhance its bonsai-like form.
• Prune sparingly, as over-pruning may slow its growth.
Repotting
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring using a slightly larger pot. Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes.
Common Problems
• Overwatering is the most frequent issue and can cause root rot.
• Watch for pests like mealybugs or spider mites, especially in indoor settings.
